Due to unforseen circumstances and conflicting events in the local music community, unfortunately the Action in Acton Concert #6: As Famous as the Moon (scheduled for 15 November 2011), has been cancelled.

CONCERT #2 - BEN MARSTON GROUP

8pm 19 APRIL 2011

Ben Marston

Ben grew up in a musical family and began playing music at an early age.  He started playing the trumpet at the age of nine in the school brass band and continued playing in high school.  When he was thirteen his musical world changed forever when his father gave him a Miles Davis CD and from that moment he followed his passion for music.

Marston began his first serious study of Jazz in year 12 when he was accepted into the ANU Jazz Prep Course and he continued this study after school where he completed a Honours degree in Jazz performance in 2002.  During this time Ben’s ideas on music began to form and in 2003, after a trip through Africa, he began to write extensively.  This led to him completing a Masters in Music in 2005 and, most importantly forming the 12 Tone Family, a group that would go on to record “Reconnaissance”.

In 2008 and 2009 Ben undertook a series of concerts at The Street Theatre that featured original music for both large and small ensembles and in 2009 these ensembles went into the studio to record.  The concert series proved to be a huge success and introduced electronic effects into the improvisation process a sound that is now an important part of his music.

CONCERT #1 - LAUNCH: BUKOVSKY/ROSENDAHL QUINTET

Miroslav Bukovsky
- Trumpet

Born in Czechoslovakia, Bukovsky grew up listening to jazz on illegal 'Voice of America' late-night broadcasts. Originally classically trained, he joined various big bands while still living in Czechoslovakia. When the Soviet army invaded his homeland in 1968, Bukovsky, who was then on tour, decided not to return. He migrated to Australia and soon found a place for himself in the Sydney jazz scene. Despite then having only a basic grasp of English, Bukovsky met a number of musicians and quickly made a name for himself jamming with them. It wasn't long before he was playing in such groups as the Daly-Wilson Big Band and Bob Bertle's Moontrane.

Bukovsky co-founded Ten Part Invention with drummer John Pochee and pianist Roger Frampton in 1986, and has been active as a composer for this band. He has also composed for his other bands, including Major Minority, which he formed in 1987, and Wanderlust, formed in 1991. Wanderlust then went on to win the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album of 1994 with their 1993 self-titled first release, Wanderlust (Rufus Records/Universal).

Due in part no doubt to his classical training, Bukovsky has great technical control of the instrument. However, his initial focus for students is predominantly on the sound and tone produced. He has been teaching at a university level since the mid-seventies, first at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and currently at the Canberra School of Music. Influenced by a wide variety of musicians including Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, Blue Mitchell, Clifford Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis, Bukovsky incorporates aspects from all jazz styles into his playing. He feels that jazz is an ever-changing fusion of influences, and his successful experiments with the music highlight the truth of this belief.
